Atomic Blonde- A review

The best way I could sum this up to someone who didn't see it and probably never would is that it was like watching a female James Bond. Which isn't a bad thing if it had something fresh to offer. It's a by the numbers spy movie with a female lead.

Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 operative, is sent to Berlin on the eve of the fall of the Berlin wall to retrieve the List, a document that contains the names of every operative working in the Soviet Union. Her point of contact is a man by the name of David Percival and the two attempt the uncover the list's whereabouts. Percival is sketchy from the get go and the two are constantly on the verge of stabbing each other in the back.

The film plays out as a flashback with Lorraine retelling the events to the heads of MI6 and the CIA. Been done before countless times, but it kept the story contain and made the audience wonder whether or not Lorraine is actually telling the truth or if she is more deeply involved than she is saying.

It was interesting enough to keep me engaged. The action sequences kept moving and there was this constant feeling of danger lurking around every turn. I just wished for something more. Charlize Theron was good but I feel like something was missing from her performance. It just left me numb. She got to look fabulous in heels while beating the life out of the bad guys and that was pretty much it. The dialogue was forgettable.

I adored James McAvoy. After seeing his turn in Split, it was interesting to see him play another lunatic.

Overall, if you're looking for something that feels familiar like a soft blanket then this is the film for you. You'll get exactly what you pay for.

Rating: If you miss it in theaters, you can always catch something like it on cable.

Once Upon A Time Season 7 Episode 1 Recap

Goodbye Storybrooke, Hello Hyperion Heights. After six long seasons of "Magic always comes with a price," and "I will always find you," we now are taking Once Upon a Time in a new direction. Thank God. There is still some fresh meat on the bones of this series after all.  Don't get me wrong, I adored all the past seasons in their own unique way. (Save for the Frozen half of season 4. We get it, Frozen is a thing. Can we move on, please?) However, it was starting to drag with underdeveloped characters, repeated stories, and foes. When it was announced that a season 7 would air, despite half the main cast leaving, I was intrigued by the possibilities.  And now we have come to the fruit of those possibilities: Hyperion Heights. It was a nice send up to the original pilot episode while setting out to be its own story. It makes it very clear from the opening that this isn't going to be the same old story that we've come to know and love. Henry leaves Sto...

This is Us Season 2 Episode 1-Recap

I must preface this with a warning. Please come with a box of tissue. Any veteran of the show's first season will tell you that the Kleenex is a badge of honor. And you will need them for the premiere of This Is Us's Season 2 Episode 1. If you have not watched the season premiere of This is Us, please for your sanity stop reading this post and watch the episodes. Return to me when you have done so. You armed with your tissues? Good. Now let's get to the highlights before I can no longer type due to the flood of tears raining down my face. Episode 1 entitled "A Father's Advice," has us catching the Big Three as they celebrate their 37th. Kevin is in the middle of shooting the Ron Howard film and he learned that Sophie won't be able to join him for his birthday due to her mother's illness. He goes forward with plans for a fancy birthday dinner with Kate and Toby. In the end, Sophie manages to make it to LA to surprise Kevin on his birthday. I wis...

The Orville-A surprising series opener

Fox did not do a good job in advertising this. From the promos, it was selling a Star Trekesque space adventure with dirty Seth MacFarlane jokes. And while there were some off-color jokes occasionally through out the episode, what we got was the groundwork for an epic space adventure. Sci-fi programs of late have been dark and gritty with characters that were just too out there to connect with. The Orville was light hearted and fun. Macfarlane wrote and stars as Ed Mercer, a down on his luck captain who finds himself in the charge of the Orville and its motley crew which include his ex-wife who he finds in bed with an alien. Their first trip out, they are tricked into landing on a planet where the head of the science department has created a time altering device. Fights break out and an epic space battle charges on screen. The sets are slick and glossy which is surprising for something that initially seemed like an excuse to cosplay Star Trek. It's light hearted ho...
