My Hope for Once Upon A Time

Every day I'm reading new articles about what's going on with Once Upon a Time and it has me both excited and scared for the series.

For those who aren't up to speed on Once's new season, I will tell you. They are rebooting it, wiping the slate clean with most of our favorite character's stories concluding with the sixth season finale. Emma Swan, the protagonist, fights the battle against evil and succeeds in vanquishing the Black Fairy and releasing Storybrooke from dark magic. Happily ever after is in the air for our characters and the story is complete. However, as we have learned with this series, nothing is as it seems.

Before you read ahead, beware that there are spoilers ahead. If you haven't seen the season sixth finale, please for your own self-preservation go watch it before reading onward.

The last few seconds of the finale see us following a young girl as she disembarks from a bus, a book of fairytales in hand. She enters an apartment building and proceeds to knock on one of the doors. A young man opens the door revealing himself to be the adult Henry Mills and the little girl knocking at his door is proclaiming to be his daughter, Lucy.

Here are the interesting tidbits that are going to be interesting to see unfold. We have a new actor, Andrew J. West, stepping in as adult Henry. Jared Gilmore who currently plays Henry, along with Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin, Josh Dallas, Rebecca Mader and Emile De Ravin will not be returning in Season 7. Jennifer Morrison is contracted to appear in at least one more episode though if it will be this season remains to be seen.

A new actress has been hired to play Cinderella. The creators of the show have explained that this new actress will be playing a different version of Cinderella than previously shown in the series. It will be explained that Henry has traveled to different realms in search of variations of the stories that his grandparents and parents had had and to make a name for himself as an author.Somewhere in his adventures is where he is supposedly cursed and requiring his daughter to go in search of him.

The remaining cast will be slightly altered versions of the characters that we've come to know and love. And here is where I foresee some problems. We've already come to know these characters, know their struggles and triumphs. To see them start over as different people are going to be difficult to watch. For me personally, it has been fascinating to watch Regina evolve over the seasons. It has been reported that she has a new name and an altered cursed backstory. Regina is one of my favorite characters on the series and I would hate to see her character cheapened in this reboot. Captain Hook and Rumplestilskin also appear to have new cursed identities as well.

I always have concerns about new characters being added to the series because Once Upon a Time has proven time and time again that they don't know what to do with a character once a storyline has been completed. For example, Robin Hood. It was great to see Regina received a love interest after all the heartache she went through. They fell in love and then it seemed like the writers didn't know what to do with him because he wasn't actively involved in the plot. Killing him was just a method of creating drama and a lax way of story telling. I hope the fates of the new characters are planned out.

Then there is the another concern: the curse. Apparently, our heroes are finding themselves under a new curse. I will ask the writers of OUAT to stop with the memory wipe curses. You've killed it to death. It was a good plot point in the first season but now with the seventh season on shaky ground, I'm hoping that it's something more than they don't remember their true identities or they can't remember what happened to them a few days prior. It's old. Please move on.

With the new season coming fast, I look forward with excitement and fear over what the new season brings. The new cast will give the series the chance to explore different variations of the classic stories that we all know and love. It will also have the opportunity the explore other stories that the show has yet to touch on. I cannot wait to see what they have in store.

Once Upon A Time Season 7 Episode 1 Recap

Goodbye Storybrooke, Hello Hyperion Heights. After six long seasons of "Magic always comes with a price," and "I will always find you," we now are taking Once Upon a Time in a new direction. Thank God. There is still some fresh meat on the bones of this series after all.  Don't get me wrong, I adored all the past seasons in their own unique way. (Save for the Frozen half of season 4. We get it, Frozen is a thing. Can we move on, please?) However, it was starting to drag with underdeveloped characters, repeated stories, and foes. When it was announced that a season 7 would air, despite half the main cast leaving, I was intrigued by the possibilities.  And now we have come to the fruit of those possibilities: Hyperion Heights. It was a nice send up to the original pilot episode while setting out to be its own story. It makes it very clear from the opening that this isn't going to be the same old story that we've come to know and love. Henry leaves Sto...

This is Us Season 2 Episode 1-Recap

I must preface this with a warning. Please come with a box of tissue. Any veteran of the show's first season will tell you that the Kleenex is a badge of honor. And you will need them for the premiere of This Is Us's Season 2 Episode 1. If you have not watched the season premiere of This is Us, please for your sanity stop reading this post and watch the episodes. Return to me when you have done so. You armed with your tissues? Good. Now let's get to the highlights before I can no longer type due to the flood of tears raining down my face. Episode 1 entitled "A Father's Advice," has us catching the Big Three as they celebrate their 37th. Kevin is in the middle of shooting the Ron Howard film and he learned that Sophie won't be able to join him for his birthday due to her mother's illness. He goes forward with plans for a fancy birthday dinner with Kate and Toby. In the end, Sophie manages to make it to LA to surprise Kevin on his birthday. I wis...

The Orville-A surprising series opener

Fox did not do a good job in advertising this. From the promos, it was selling a Star Trekesque space adventure with dirty Seth MacFarlane jokes. And while there were some off-color jokes occasionally through out the episode, what we got was the groundwork for an epic space adventure. Sci-fi programs of late have been dark and gritty with characters that were just too out there to connect with. The Orville was light hearted and fun. Macfarlane wrote and stars as Ed Mercer, a down on his luck captain who finds himself in the charge of the Orville and its motley crew which include his ex-wife who he finds in bed with an alien. Their first trip out, they are tricked into landing on a planet where the head of the science department has created a time altering device. Fights break out and an epic space battle charges on screen. The sets are slick and glossy which is surprising for something that initially seemed like an excuse to cosplay Star Trek. It's light hearted ho...
